Guinea Pig Care Information

This section is a combination of information on various topics about how I look after my pigs, and my opinions on questions I am frequently asked. I am not an expert and it is only my own experiences which are represented here. It contains only general care information, and is not a medical guide, nor is it intended to replace other sources of advice on cavy care in any way. If you are at all worried about the health of your cavy even if it is just a hunch, please get it to a good vet as soon as possible and seek proper medical attention. The best piece of advice I can give is to find a good cavy vet, with an emergency service before you need one. Guinea pigs hide illnesses very well. In the wild this means they are less recognisable as the weakest of the bunch which predators will go for first. At home, this simply means that by the time your pig is showing signs of illness, it may well have been unwell for a while and is probably in need of urgent treatment to survive.

Message boards are a great way to meet other people with guinea pigs, and to gain a wide range of opinions on any problems or queries you may have regarding the health, behaviour, welfare or happiness of your pigger. There are links to several at the top of this page, each has their own flavour. Guinea Lynx is the best for medical information, and if you have a health problem with your pigger, I strongly recommend you visit there first.
